About this edition

Album “Gleb Vyatkin, Petr Zverkhovsky in the Project Jack of Diamonds. Postscript” is catalog, addon and a separate part of our experimental exhibition project implemented in collaboration with the Volgograd Mashkov Museum of Fine Arts in 2012.

In this project we have raised many points about the ways and the directions the Russian modernism goes in the twentieth century. Where does the history of the art group “Jack of Diamonds” end? In 1917, when was the last exhibition of this group? In the 1930s, when is the Russian modernist tradition forcibly interrupted? In the sixties or much later? Do the characteristic features of early Russian modernism find a response and development in the second half of the 20th century? Is the influence of the art group “Jack of Diamonds” limited only to the Moscow school of painting? What, in general, are the boundaries of Russian modernism and what are the features of its development?

Our project (and this album) compares the works of two Volgograd artists Gleb Vyatkin and Pyotr Zverkhovsky and the works of the Jack of Diamonds members, as well as the later artists of “the Jack of Diamonds school” – Ilya Mashkov, Pyotr Konchalovsky, Aristarkh Lentulov, Alexander Kuprin, Robert Falk and Alexander Osmerkin.

The album includes works from the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, Volgograd Mashkov Museum of Fine Arts, as well as the personal collection of Peter Aven.
